SmartVerses, public domain and open licenses, and importing your own files

We are working to add more licensed and built-in Bible translations directly into SmartVerses over time. Official translations you can install from the app are hosted by SmartVerses and listed in the app when available.

In the meantime, many Bible texts in different languages may be available online in public domain or openly licensed formats. “Free to download” is not the same as public domain or a clear open license—you should read the terms for any text you use.

One example source is seven1m/open-bibles, which collects public domain and openly licensed Bible texts in common XML formats. Another useful source is Beblia/Holy-Bible-XML-Format. Always review the license notes for the specific translation you want to use.

You can also import your own compatible Bible files in supported formats such as XML or JSON, using the conversion tool in the SmartVerses desktop app.

Please make sure you have the legal right to use any translation you download or import. Some projects may describe files as free or public domain, but you should do your own review and confirm the license or copyright status before using them.

SmartVerses does not endorse third-party sources and does not verify third-party licensing claims.

The desktop app can work with structured XML in common Bible-XML layouts and with JSON that maps books, chapters, and verses. The in-app conversion tool turns supported inputs into SmartVerses .svjson files stored in your Bibles folder.

Open Settings, find Get More Translations, then choose Open conversion tool. Follow the steps for XML or JSON, add accurate metadata, and save the result. Only use content you have the right to use.
